Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 256fb24c46 A cap on the catalog's NVMe size: above it only the tail and the stored ranges
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 54s
Test and deploy / edge (push) Successful in 2m3s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m20s
After reset 24 the catalog grew ~3.7 GB an hour (77 GB, root 31 GB free, 600k
history ranges to go). CATALOG_MAX_NVME_GB (as voyager 1's
BACKFILL_MAX_NVME_GB): once the default tablespace is over it, leases and the
prefetcher take priority < 0 only (the tail, the stored ranges); measured once
a minute. Off when unset; 90 on homelab.

Kaizen's "v2.0.1021" ... "v2.0.1057" became one release (505 names on the

f1c5af5's set head (an image's name up to its first number) split sets whose
images aren't named alike: "a1.jpg" beside "a1 (2).jpg", and "468_1000.jpg"
whose first number is the image's (1 release became 211 and 161 on the
corpus). The random volume stem stays. Tests keep both sets whole.

- "[ TOWN ] [ www town ag ] [ TV ] … "Z3mMTMPsoT4ikE_Di3fKnNF21.part01.rar"",
"….vol4+4.par2": the subject and the total were the key, so every upload of
a total was one release (2,338 files for 20; also partner-of-ssl-news,
brothers-of-usenet). A random stem (no dots or spaces) on a volume file
joins the subject key; a scene name doesn't, so its nfo stays.
- "Molly Set [i/50] "mo103x003.jpg"": every set of 50 was one. An image's
name up to its first number, when another follows, joins the key.

letters before the number alone, so every post of a poster was one release
(5,731 images for 559; 6,433 tracks for 457). Under a counter its total is

A spot older than what the catalog has indexed (the spotter's first backfill
reaches back ~3 months) matched nothing and would have become a release of
its own, a duplicate once the history pass builds the upload. Unmatched
spots are matched again in turns (rematched_at) for 30 days; the 24 h before
a standalone release count from the inspection; a later match deletes the
spot's own release and links the header pass's.

The spool only fetches what workers lease soon, in priority order, and the
tail never ends: after a reset the 1,400 capture ranges waited behind it
while 34 of 40 connections idled. Up to CORPUS_AHEAD (8) planned capture
ranges whose chunks aren't all stored are now targets after everything else,
fetched into the corpus only (no spool); a later lease reads them from disk.

not the host before it (www.x2l.nl).
- Text ending in a host ("… www.libranews.nl") is no file name; a name in

The prober stores, per probed article that starts a file, the MD5 of its
first 16 KiB (file_hashes), and per par2 body the set's whole file list
(par2_files, par2_sets): FileDesc holds the same hash per file, whatever
the file was renamed to. releases:merge (the merger service, no NNTP)
merges every minute the releases of one group, posted within 48 hours of
a release holding the set's par2, whose files the set describes, into the
one with the most files: chunks, probe candidates, inspections, hashes and
counts move; the par2's shared name when none was readable; release_merges
keeps what went where. Obfuscated uploads whose files were each a release
of their own ("[9/20] - "14f5999a…"", hep: 13,232) become one.

Also: corpus_sweep.py counts the marked ranges without psql's command tag.

Ranges marked `capture` keep their XOVER chunks in CORPUS_DIR
(corpus/<group>/<start>-<end>/, edge-bench's layout, range.json once
complete; only chunks that inflate). The prefetcher reads a stored chunk
instead of fetching it, so a reset re-indexes them without the news
server; a chunk a worker reports corrupt goes from the corpus too.

edge-bench gets --releases (release chunks without payload, with their
first subjects) and ships in the edge image; deploy/corpus_sweep.py marks
more ranges (capture), replays the corpus with the deployed build (replay)
and reports suspects and the change since the previous build (report).

"Spotlight - 83xx's [16/19] - \"SC8367-12 - Wynette, Tammy - Singing My

poster-tag rule keyed every track by its own name. A stem starting with
an upper-case code and digits before the track number (SC8367-12,
ZMP050-04) is a numbered item too. Both implementations; tests; fixtures

fta's, 94% of models' (LOG.md 2026-10-11 (5)). With a segment counter and
no quoted name, unquotedName takes the name before a lone quote (after a
"[", else after the last space), else the text when it ends in a file
name (after "] " or " - "), else its first word that is one; a file
counter stuck in a bracket is dropped. The release identity takes such a
name out of the subject as it would quotes (else every image of a set
was a release: 9,130 instead of 267 on the models fixture).

probe:run (compose service prober, PROBE_CONNECTIONS, default 6) claims
waiting candidates of settled releases (lone, then par2, then archive),
fetches each article with BODY over connections of its own (no
compression) and inspects it: the yEnc name and size, the content type
from the first bytes, a par2 set's files, a RAR volume's entries and
whether they're encrypted. Results per release and kind in
release_inspections (CHUNK_TABLESPACE, the HDD); on the release
passworded, inner_name (the largest content name) and inspected_at.
430 = missing, not yEnc = error, both final; connection trouble puts
the candidate back.

Fetch and parse in one process: an article takes ~0.1 s per connection,
parsing a few ms (no queue in between). Parsers from voyager 1 (lib/yenc,
lib/rar, lib/par2, lib/content sniff) with their tests; XoverClient.body;

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 f4c0417066 Rebuild: enough ranges being fetched for every connection
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 25s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m1s
With 2 connections per range the prefetcher needs 20+ ranges with
chunks left; fully spooled ranges counted as ready (SPOOL_AHEAD_PER_LEASE)
but take no connection, so on small ranges 30 of 40 connections were
busy (13-15 ranges). Fresh ranges now also fill up to loops/perRange + 2
ranges being fetched.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 40aa78cda3 Rebuild: a deadline per chunk; batches with a huge fragment
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 29s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m30s
A worker waited on one chunk of a leased range for an hour (range
146477: five 15-minute stream timeouts, then the range took 63 s; 88
"stream: Peer disconnected" overnight). The silence timeout doesn't
catch a reply that trickles: a chunk still coming in after
NNTP_CHUNK_DEADLINE_SECONDS (300) is given up, its connection closed,
and fetched again. The report names the oldest request in flight (range,
chunk, age, bytes in) and counts deadlines.

Batches failed with "Maximum call stack size exceeded" (8 overnight):
Math.min(...segments) on a fragment with more segments than the stack
takes arguments.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 84d3af5511 Rebuild: a proper deployment for voyager 2
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 48s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m12s
Dockerfile with two targets: app (compiled AdonisJS, production
dependencies, Node 24.16 as in CI) and edge (the Rust worker, cargo
caches as build mounts). deploy/compose.yaml, project usenet-rebuild:
postgres (data on the HDD, catalog tablespace on the NVMe), migrate,
web, coordinator, edge; edge-ts and ace behind profiles.
deploy/deploy.sh (~/bin/deploy-usenet-rebuild on homelab): fetches the
commit (must be on rebuild), builds, migrates, recreates web,
coordinator and edge (the worker stopped first), never postgres.

CI deploys a push to rebuild that passes: the deploy key's forced
command passes "deploy-rebuild <sha>" on. A push to master no longer
deploys from this branch's workflow. deploy/README.md.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 678b3dd438 Rebuild: spread prefetch connections over ranges and groups
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 23s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
At most PREFETCH_PER_RANGE (2) connections on a range and
PREFETCH_PER_GROUP (4) on a group; SPOOL_AHEAD_PER_LEASE 2 -> 4 so there
are targets enough. The report says how many ranges and groups are in
flight.

Homelab, 40 connections, alternated 12 min each: unlimited (~10 ranges
in flight) 281k and 167k articles/s; spread (~22 ranges) 319k and 296k,
chunks 11.5 s against 13-24 s.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 4bf526ab6e Rebuild: prefetch report samples what the connections do
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 44s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Once a second: pool connections with a command in flight, loops
fetching/writing/idle; per request GROUP time, XOVER time to the status
line and the transfer, transfers with a silence over 5 s. The old
"connections busy" (fetch time of the chunks finished in the minute)
said 59-75% while all 40 connections were in flight all the time:
dropped.

Homelab: 39-40 of 40 in flight, no idle loops; the status line comes at
once, the whole 8-35 s is the transfer, with data flowing (few gaps
over 5 s): ~3 MB per chunk at 0.1-0.4 MB/s per connection.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 8475969145 Rebuild: hedged chunk fetches and connection max age (both off by default)
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 24s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
A chunk not in after NNTP_HEDGE_AFTER_SECONDS (10) is asked again on one
of NNTP_HEDGE_CONNECTIONS spare connections; the first answer wins and
the other connection is closed (lib/nntp/hedge.ts, tested). Connections
can be retired after NNTP_CONNECTION_MAX_MINUTES (±25%). The prefetch
report counts hedges and slow first requests by connection age.

Homelab, 15 min each: hedging on (40 + 6) 280k articles/s, off 273k.
The second request won about half of its races, but ~25-35% of first
requests were slow (>10 s) at every connection age, so neither helps:
Eweka is slow under our load, not on particular connections. Both
off by default; the age statistics stay.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 fc8ec9ff48 Rebuild: tools/compress_ab.ts, compressed vs plain XOVER side by side
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 24s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Each chunk fetched with and without XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP on two
connections at the same moment. 30 chunks on homelab (24 bottom-500,
6 deferred): medians 2.9 s compressed, 3.2 s plain; 59 vs 350 bytes
per article. Slow fetches (27-52 s) hit either mode, rarely both.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 8442c4fc44 Rebuild: 2-minute NNTP reply timeout; the Rust worker runs on homelab
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m9s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Eweka stopped answering on all 40 of the coordinator's long-lived
connections (quiet sockets; a fresh connection fetched the same chunk in
20 s): with a 10-minute timeout the prefetcher fetched one chunk a
minute. The timeout (silence, not duration) is 2 minutes now: 365-411k
articles/s after the restart. tools/probe_chunk.ts times a chunk
compressed and plain.

README and REBUILD.md: edge-node, the Rust worker, is the one running
(8x less CPU per header, 20x less memory than edge:node in production).
