Test and deploy / edge (push) Successful in 1m47s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m45s
Releases 78361820 and 78411563 were two files of one FTD upload
("Yusef_Lateef-Alight_Upon_the_Lake_…-WEB-2026-FTD", [1/6] and [3/6], 4 s
apart) under a new random poster each ("N9vplIaavBCz@aCTVoAsk.JSE",
"FVWWHku0fGAg@QfaTz0g0.RVH"): the stem key includes the poster. When the
poster's own name (before the @) looks random, it's left out of the key;
real posters keep theirs (two uploaders of one scene release at the same
time stay apart), and uploads hours apart stay apart by the re-upload
rule. Both implementations; tests; fixtures identical.

Old picture groups split every image into a release (the reset's first
hour: 583k releases, 447k of one file; a.b.pictures.erotica.high-heels
262k): "Aletta Ocean - \"100628-035.jpg\" yEnc [347K]" kept its size in
the remainder, and "Corie - \"2877-041.jpg\" yEnc [290K]" named its set
with one word, which namesRelease (two words) refused, so the image's
own name keyed it. Sizes like [347K] (and a cut-off "336573 byt") are
removed; for images a one-word subject (3+ letters) names the set. On
100k high-heels articles: 4,509 releases -> 192. Both implementations;
tests; fixtures identical.

"ai-engineer-complete [401/465] - \"003 Defining Tools with JSON
Schema.mp4\"": the subject's text shares no word with the lesson's
descriptive name, so it was taken for a poster's constant tag and each of
the course's 465 files keyed a release of its own (releases 75941915,
75941916). A stem starting with a 1-3 digit index and a separator is an
item of a set the subject names, as audio tracks and images already
were; uploads hours apart stay apart by the re-upload rule. Both
implementations; tests; fixtures identical.

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 51s
Test and deploy / edge (push) Successful in 1m48s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m25s
Most "obfuscated" subjects of older and smaller groups name their file
without quotes ("DVDFab 8.2.0.5.rar (006/332)", fta's "q3B9…part023.rar
(104/137)", "New_Super_Mario_Bros._[Keygen].exe (1/2)") or with one
quote ("[keira_s04_0037_l.jpg\" yEnc] (2/2)"): 100% of ath 2013's and
fta's, 94% of models' (LOG.md 2026-10-11 (5)). With a segment counter and
no quoted name, unquotedName takes the name before a lone quote (after a
"[", else after the last space), else the text when it ends in a file
name (after "] " or " - "), else its first word that is one; a file
counter stuck in a bracket is dropped. The release identity takes such a
name out of the subject as it would quotes (else every image of a set
was a release: 9,130 instead of 267 on the models fixture).

Both implementations; a fourth fixture (fta, 25k lines) and tests; check
identical on all four. Truly random subjects (ngPost hex = message-id,
random tokens) stay obfuscated.

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 46s
Test and deploy / edge (push) Successful in 1m54s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m56s
User: Rust is the product (option a). tools/edge-bench-rs moves to edge/
(crate edge; binaries edge-node, the worker, and edge-bench, the replay).
CI's new job edge runs cargo test and edge/check-fixtures.sh: both
RangeIndexers on three committed captures (edge/fixtures, 25k overview
lines each of a.b.models, a.b.ath and a.b.boneless in 5 chunks, 3.5 MB),
compared field by field with check.ts; deploy waits for it. The
TypeScript RangeIndexer stays as check.ts's reference. README: what it
is now; the benchmark findings as history.

Random names: looksRandom missed long tokens of capitals and digits
("51294P1CUKR2R35X", release 74539068, readable and a Newznab title).
12+ capitals and digits switching 6+ times between them are random
(COD4MW2REMASTERED switches 4 times, BEATLES1964REMASTER twice); both
implementations, identical on the fixtures.

Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m18s
Lone candidates are often par2 volumes of random-named sets
("42507096….vol007+08.par2"): their yEnc name was taken as the inner
name. Packaging names are skipped for lone files too, and a name that
starts with the release's own name says nothing new.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 738402aefa Prober: an inspection per candidate; no inner name that is the release's name
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 53s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m53s
A release can have several candidates of a kind (two RAR sets): keyed by
(release, kind) both landed in one upsert ("ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE
command cannot affect row a second time"), and the batch was lost.
release_inspections is keyed by candidate now; the first run's results
are cleared and probed again. A random-named file's yEnc name is often
its random name: an inner name equal to the release's name is dropped.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 8bd6d6aa5f Rebuild: phase 2's prober reads the probe queue
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 50s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m46s
probe:run (compose service prober, PROBE_CONNECTIONS, default 6) claims
waiting candidates of settled releases (lone, then par2, then archive),
fetches each article with BODY over connections of its own (no
compression) and inspects it: the yEnc name and size, the content type
from the first bytes, a par2 set's files, a RAR volume's entries and
whether they're encrypted. Results per release and kind in
release_inspections (CHUNK_TABLESPACE, the HDD); on the release
passworded, inner_name (the largest content name) and inspected_at.
430 = missing, not yEnc = error, both final; connection trouble puts
the candidate back.

Fetch and parse in one process: an article takes ~0.1 s per connection,
parsing a few ms (no queue in between). Parsers from voyager 1 (lib/yenc,
lib/rar, lib/par2, lib/content sniff) with their tests; XoverClient.body;
yencode.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 fc1c64d5c0 Rebuild: drop NUL from batches; chunk deadline 180 s
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 24s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m0s
A file name with a NUL ("…Brutal Erpresst.ra\u0000…") failed every
batch of range 155595 (HTTP 500, jsonb: \u0000 cannot be converted to
text), so the range looped. fromWire drops NUL from every string.

The chunk deadline was given up 258 times in 3 hours at 300 s (~1.4 a
minute, each holding a connection for 5 minutes): 180 s.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 8475969145 Rebuild: hedged chunk fetches and connection max age (both off by default)
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 24s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
A chunk not in after NNTP_HEDGE_AFTER_SECONDS (10) is asked again on one
of NNTP_HEDGE_CONNECTIONS spare connections; the first answer wins and
the other connection is closed (lib/nntp/hedge.ts, tested). Connections
can be retired after NNTP_CONNECTION_MAX_MINUTES (±25%). The prefetch
report counts hedges and slow first requests by connection age.

Homelab, 15 min each: hedging on (40 + 6) 280k articles/s, off 273k.
The second request won about half of its races, but ~25-35% of first
requests were slow (>10 s) at every connection age, so neither helps:
Eweka is slow under our load, not on particular connections. Both
off by default; the age statistics stay.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 0613984de9 Rebuild: re-uploads are releases of their own
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 26s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
A poster re-uploading under the same name made one release of all
uploads: in a sample, 24% of releases with 2+ files had a file name more
than once (4.3% of files extra copies), 70% of those copies posted a day
or more apart; their NZBs listed each copy.

- File assembly keeps a re-upload's copy apart: a part already in every
open copy, posted more than 3 h from them, starts another copy; a
missing part fills the nearest copy (a re-send of what was missing),
a re-sent part near a copy that has it is ignored as before.
- A key's files in a batch split into uploads where posting pauses for
more than 3 h, counted from the latest article posted so far (a file
that takes hours to post doesn't split it); each upload is judged and
chunked on its own (ReleaseChunk.upload, .postedLast; candidates carry
  their upload).
- The catalog matches a chunk to the release of its key whose articles
the range's group owns and whose posting window is within 3 h, else
  starts one (key, key:2, …): releases get identity_key, group_id,
last_posted_at. Keys are locked in order (advisory locks), so
concurrent batches neither deadlock nor both start one; the merger
writes in key order too. The same upload multi-posted to other groups
  is a release per group.
- The gap: 91% of uploads post within 3 h; 73% of re-uploaded copies
come later (releases:upload-gaps). releases:duplicates measures the
  duplicate names.

Both implementations; check.ts compares the windows and uploads too
(identical on all captures; Rust tests mirror the TypeScript cases).

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 14758a5b7a Rebuild: image sets, documents and audio albums as releases
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 22s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Picture groups made a release per image: 501k single-file releases in
the first 24 ranges of the bottom 500 groups (a.b.models 385k), ~120M
for all of them. Counters written out ('File 027 of 132', '[12of42]',
'104 of 472', '[2239-6389]', '02/17', '0097-1574'; only when the first
number is at most the second, so '[1948-12]' stays) and per-file sizes
('76.88 MB', '335555 Bytes') kept every subject unique.

- subjectRemainder removes those counters and sizes, and empty brackets.
- A subject-named release is bounded by its counter's total
(counterTotal: the first form found): uploads a poster names alike
stay apart, an upload's files (par2, nfo) together.
- Images and audio tracks don't take the poster-tag rule: the subject
names the set or album. An image set without a counter: the image's
name up to its last number, without numbers.
- Documents and comics (pdf, epub, mobi, azw3, djvu, cbr, cbz, cb7, chm,
lit, doc, docx) are a release each: collections post hundreds under
  one subject ('cw-horror&mystery').

releases:regroup --group re-keys a group's indexed releases together:
cheerleaders 55,741 -> 3,165 releases, models 385,298 -> 40,313, German
audiobooks 4,106 -> 1,724, playstation 3,309 -> 2,345; comics and
e-books a release per item; boneless unchanged. Ported to edge-bench-rs;
check.ts: identical on all captures.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 59481037fb Rebuild: a poster's constant tag no longer makes one release of all their uploads
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 28s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Release 145637 held four albums: the poster puts '[KiLL.dA.FuCkIn.
EaStErRaBbIt]----' before every upload, and the text outside the quotes
(when it names a release) was the key with the poster. The same made
one release of a poster's albums under '(PowBeertje80 Posted)' (a post
id, with the same [i/M]), of masterposts' films, and of one volume of
every set in a DVD9 post.

Now, when the file's stem describes something itself (12+ letters and
digits, two words of 3+ letters) and the text outside the quotes shares
no word with it (4+ letters as part of the stem, 3-letter words and
numbers whole; boilerplate like www/net/posted not counted; no 5+ digit
per-post id), that text is taken for the poster's tag and the stem
says which release the file is. Albums of track files ('FTA … Ketchup'),
'DIE_ZEIT_35' with '35_China_dl', 'FTD769997' posts, scene names with
abbreviated file names ('grp-sm') and generic sidecars ('file_id.diz')
keep their grouping.

releases:regroup re-keys a sample of the catalog with the current rule:
on homelab's test data 145637 → 4 albums, 111566 → 17 albums of 27
files, the rest of the subject releases that change mostly lose an ad
image ('Flyer-download-2-Day.gif'); stem releases unchanged. Ported to
edge-bench-rs: check.ts still finds all captures identical (ath 2013:
16 → 76 releases on both sides).

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 fd0f2bde75 Rebuild: the live tail
coordinator:run plans the articles after each group's last range every
TAIL_EVERY_SECONDS (120): one LIST ACTIVE per name prefix gives every
group's newest article, and new articles become ranges at priority -1,
leased and prefetched before any history. A group gets a tail range once
it has TAIL_MIN_ARTICLES (100k, a chunk) new or its last planning is
TAIL_MAX_DELAY_MINUTES (15) ago, so quiet groups don't make a range every
round. History (planAll, hourly) is now only for groups not planned yet.
ranges:plan --tail plans one round.

Found on the way: with XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP on, Eweka compresses LIST
ACTIVE's reply too ("215 NewsGroups Follow [COMPRESS=GZIP]"), and
listActive waited for a plain end that never came (groups:add --top too).
It reads the compressed reply now; the fake server in the test does both.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 2c14315f94 Rebuild: fragments only for files an edge cut; lone random articles are per-article
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 21s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Skipped
Measured on two neighbouring boneless ranges (merging their fragments):
- 99.8% of fragment files were single articles of a random-named
'file' of >100 parts: a random subject per article, which never
completes from headers. They now count as per-article.
- A file is kept as a fragment when its first part seen is above 1 and
comes within the start window (the idle window: uploads in busy groups
spread over minutes, and a 50k-article edge zone is ~30 s of boneless),
or when it was still open at the range's end with later parts missing.
Anything else missing parts is incomplete and only counted.
Per range: 70,308 → 130 fragment files; merged, 47 of the 48 files met
complete (57,558 segments, ~8% of the range's kept segments).

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 21s

End to end (workstation, recent a.b.boneless ranges from the spool): a 2M
range in 10–12 s, 166k–202k headers/s per worker process (edge:bench on
one core: 215k).

- Prefetcher: spooled_at was set against a total counted from the range's
resume point, which shrinks as the worker advances: the last chunks were
never fetched and the worker waited. Now counted against the whole
range, only new chunks counted, and leased ranges are always checked
against the files. Planned ranges ahead are bounded (it had spooled ever
more); the spool size is measured every 30 s (a stat per file).
- The stream sends an empty frame every 20 s while waiting for a chunk
(Node's fetch gave up on a quiet body after 5 minutes).
- A range taken over midway: the first batch starts at the resume point
(it started at the range's start and was refused).
- edge:node inflates the next chunk on the thread pool while indexing the
current one, and doesn't wait for a post before indexing on (posts stay
in order; a failed post stops the range).

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 96f0ade10e Rebuild: fresh AdonisJS 7 API app on Postgres
The rebuild branch starts over (REBUILD.md): the API starter kit, with
Postgres instead of SQLite (its own database, DB_SEARCH_PATH for a
shared one in development) and the #lib alias. Phase 1's code is
imported from the current app module by module.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 ee898be8c8 Spots: more password phrasings; read listed spots' articles and NZBs
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 57s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 4m18s
passwordFromSpot finds 30 more passwords in the stored descriptions (480
→ 510): words between keyword and separator, trailing "!!", the value on
the next line, "wachtwoord is x", "… wachtwoord. Deze is: x", "WW x" as a
whole line.

Listed spots were read from their overview only, so the NZB's own
password and the description were unknown for 2.27M of them.
SpotService.readListing reads the spot's article and NZB without
importing files: details, the NZB password (over a spot-text one), the
spot-text password, placeholder NZBs. worker:spots does a batch when
idle; spot:postprocess works through the history (nzb_read_at).

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m35s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m59s
Eweka answers 'no such article' after ~450 ms; a quarter of inspection
requests were for missing articles and each failed job was retried up
to three times. Files get content_type 'missing' instead; homelab also
records it from failure reports of nodes not rebuilt yet.

Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m51s
Measured with 20 relay connections, plain and gzip both gave ~1.5 chunks/s
for 2026 a.b.ath articles; plain used many times the CPU and traffic.

For 2026 a.b.ath articles Eweka's gzip replies have a long tail (p90 12.4 s
per 20k vs 3.9 s plain; 6.1k vs 10.5k headers/s). SEED_NNTP_COMPRESS turns
compression back on; plain replies are deflated for nodes asynchronously.

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m27s

- seed:plan plans every part of a group's history no range covers (it
started below the lowest known range and left a.b.ath's 13 most recent
months out); seed_ranges.priority orders leases (seed:plan --priority).
- binaries.part_count, kept by the parts insert in the same statement:
claimCompleted compares it instead of counting parts every batch.
- file_keys: 64-bit hashes of all file keys; FileStore.insert asks it
  before probing every files partition.
- worker:file stores 100 completed binaries per job with set-based queries.

Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m49s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m15s
Inspection is split into prepare (database), probe (lib/content/probe:
downloads, decoding and parsing, no database) and apply (database).
worker:collection runs all three; seed:node with SEED_INSPECTORS leases
jobs from the same queues through the seed API (BullMQ manual leases),
fetches articles through the seed API and posts the probes back.

A node now needs only SEED_URL and SEED_TOKEN: the settings the app
requires but a node never uses get placeholders for seed:node.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 b7ae8267c6 Seed relay: a stalled compressed XOVER is fetched again uncompressed
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m9s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m41s
The four ranges kept failing on fresh connections too: in gzip mode Eweka
stops some chunks partway (a.b.ath 49701720000: 19,672 of 20,000
overviews, the last line cut, then silence), while the same chunk without
compression comes in 0.3 s. A failed relay chunk is now retried once
without compression on a connection of its own (dead pooled connections are
covered by the same retry).

Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m46s
Five ranges "never answered" in 10 minutes, yet their chunk came back in
0.3 s on a fresh connection: the news server drops idle connections
without telling, and the pool's next request on one waited for the
10-minute inactivity timeout. Now: SEED_NNTP_TIMEOUT_MS 90 s (inactivity;
slow ranges keep streaming), one retry on a fresh connection, and pooled
connections idle over 60 s are replaced before use.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 530a752cca Seed: finished ranges marked done; relay XOVER timeout 10 minutes
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m37s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m10s
- A range reported to its end but not finished (its node went away at
the very end) was leased again with start past end; nodes asked for
"from 49208000000 to 49207999999", got 400, and the range failed after
five leases. The orchestrator now marks such ranges done before
leasing, and runRange reports them done without fetching.
- Some old ranges come so slowly that one XOVER of 20k headers takes over
two minutes: five ranges failed on "NNTP reply timed out". The relay
  pool's timeout is SEED_NNTP_TIMEOUT_MS (default 10 minutes, the node's
  HTTP timeout).

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 41859636d3 Seed relay: nodes get their headers through the seed API
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m28s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m5s
The seed API keeps a pool of NNTP connections (SEED_NNTP_CONNECTIONS) and
serves GET /api/v1/seed/ranges/:id/chunk?from=&to= for leased ranges:
the gzip stream the news server sent, passed on unopened. seed:node fetches
that way by default (SEED_FETCH=relay), so a node needs only a token and
SEED_CONNECTIONS; SEED_FETCH=direct keeps its own NNTP connections. All
fetching then comes from the indexer's IP (the account allows two).

- lib/nntp/xover_client: a minimal one-connection client for seed:range
with XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP (a zlib stream after "224 … [COMPRESS=GZIP]",
then a "." line; 420 for an empty range). About 6x less header traffic.
Overviews come out with the field names nntp-js uses.
- SfvService.claimAll: one sfv_entries lookup per stored batch.
- Fragments go through the regular ingest path beside fetching (at most
two batches in flight); a failure fails the run at the end.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 68eb9a44fd Edge aggregation: seed:range indexes history one row per file
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m36s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 3m37s
A seeding node fetches a range over one NNTP connection, parses headers
with the live rules, groups them into files in memory (lib/aggregate) and
stores per complete file its release, the file and a completed binary
(SeedService), instead of one parts row per article. What doesn't complete
within the window goes through the regular ingest path as fragments.
`--dry-run` only fetches and aggregates, to measure a node.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 95f1d427df Inspect fewer files: skip later volumes under random stems
Test and deploy / test (push) Successful in 1m25s
Test and deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 2m58s
Of 5,000 waiting inspection jobs, 3,212 were queued only because their
stem looked random, and 2,044 of those were later RAR volumes
(xyz.part47.rar, .r00) or par2 recovery volumes (.vol03+04.par2). Their
first segment adds nothing: the set is listed from its first volume and
named from its index .par2, as for readable names already. Each one cost a
~700 KB download; inspection pulled ~85 MB/s and fell behind the backfill.

- isCandidate() rejects later volumes (isLaterVolume) before the random-
  name rule.
- worker:file only queues files that are candidates, so the ~30% that
inspection skips anyway no longer take queue slots.

Daan MeijerandClaude Opus 5.5 be8a3d4580 Spotnet import, header backfill, staging and counter grouping, faster search
Spotnet (CONCEPT D29):
- Index free.pt fully and import spots with their descriptions, categories
and NZBs; a spot renames its release, since Spotnet names are more
trustworthy than names derived from subjects.
- Find passwords in spot descriptions too, and tell "needs a password we
have" from "needs a password we don't have".

Content inspection:
- List the contents of 7z (.7z.001) archives, SFV sets, nicovideo uploads
and other archive-like files; mark yEncBin .bin containers as encrypted.
- Take real names from yEnc headers for randomly named files, and merge
uploads that were split across posts.

Storage (D31, D32):
- Store segment lists zstd-compressed behind the FileStore accessor.
- group:backfill indexes older headers at low priority and pauses when
the NVMe or HDD part of the database gets too large.

Grouping (D35, D36):
- Lone header segments wait in staged_segments until a second segment of
their file arrives, which drops the per-article junk binaries.
- Counter grouping joins random-subject uploads by poster, [i/M] counter,
  part count and day.

Search and maintenance (D33, D34):
- A trigram-indexed search_text column, smaller indexes, estimated stats.
- Passes that clean up nonsense names; weekly index maintenance; GC budgets
  per kind.
- Web UI: grey out stale results while a search runs and cancel superseded
requests. Count only up to 1,000 matches for the page, which made filter
clicks take seconds (Newznab keeps the 10,000 cap).
